In 2010,during the budget speech by Malaysia's 6th Prime Minister, Dato' Sri Mohd. Najib Tun Abdul Razak, the development of the IIUM Medical Centre was announced. To bring this vision to life, federal and state agencies were mobilized, and by early 2011, an agreement was finalized between AZRB, the Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Health, and IIUM, with an approved budget of 412 million.
The IIUM Medical Centre was constructed on 27.8 acres of land through the Private Funding Initiative (PFI) under a 25-year concession agreement. It features 300 inpatient beds and is supported by over 133 specialists. The centre also includes an undergraduate and postgraduate teaching hospital and a tertiary referral centre, enhancing the medical and allied health faculty.
On 12th December 2012, the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony was held, officiated by His Royal Highness, Sultan Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in Billah of Pahang, who was also the Constitutional Head of IIUM at the time.
This ceremony marked the commencement of the IIUM Medical Centre's construction. On 9th May 2016, the centre was handed over to IIUM, a success attributed to the coordinated efforts of administrators and all relevant agencies.
On 18th March 2020, the IIUM Medical Centre was officially renamed Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @IIUM, commonly known as SASMEC @IIUM, by Her Majesty, Seri Paduka Baginda, the Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tunku Hajah Azizah Maimunah Iskandariah binti Almarhum Al-Mutawakkil Alallah Sultan Iskandar Al-Haj, who is also the current Constitutional Head of IIUM.
