Department of Radiology
Department of Radiology Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @IIUM(SASMEC @IIUM) is located on the Ground floor and is well- equipped with general X-ray, Ultrasound, Mammography, CT Scan, MRI, Angiography, Fluoroscopy, Ortopantomogram and Bone Densitometry.
Our department is operated by a team of dedicated and qualified professionals and provides diagnostic and interventional services with the optimal utilisation of the imaging equipment, through Radiology Information System (RIS) integrated with picture archiving and communication system (PACS) that permits economical storage and fast access through computers. It is conveniently easy for doctors and health practitioners to authorise the images without any X-ray films.
24-hour imaging service is provided for emergency and urgent cases.

General Radiography, commonly referred to as X-ray was the first established modality of Diagnostic Imaging. X-rays are used to create single images of the internal structures. The equipment may be static or mobile, allowing X-rays to be done by the bedside. These images are used to detect abnormalities in bones, lungs and other internal organs, for further assessments with other modalities.
Ultrasound imaging uses sound waves is safe, non-invasive and does not use ionizing radiation. It is used to help diagnose the causes of pain, swelling and infection inside the body and to examine a baby in a pregnant women and the brain and hips in infants. It’s also used to help guide biopsies, diagnose heart conditions, and assess damage after a heart attack.
Mammography is a process of using low-energy ionizing radiation to examine the breasts for diagnostic and screening. The goal of mammography is the early detection of breast cancer, typically through detection of characteristic masses or micro calcifications.
An OPG is a panoramic view x-ray of the lower face, which displays all the teeth of the upper and lower jaw on a single film. It demonstrates the number, position and growth of all the teeth including those that have not yet surfaced or erupted. It is different from the small close up x-rays dentists take of individual teeth. An OPG may also reveal problems with the jawbone and the joint WHICH called the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). OPG may be requested for the planning of orthodontic treatment, for assessment of wisdom teeth or for a general overview of the teeth and the bone which supports the teeth.
Bone mineral densitometry also called dual-energy xray absorptiometry (DEXA) uses a very small dose of ionizing radiation to produce pictures of the lower of spine & hips, to measure bone loss. It is commonly used to diagnose osteoporosis, to assess an individual’s risk for developing osteoporotic fractures. It is simple, quick and non-invasive.
Fluoroscopy is a study of moving body structures. It’s much like an X-ray “movie” and is often done while a contrast dye moves through the part of the body being examined. A continuous X-ray beam is passed through the body part and sent to a video monitor so that the body part and its motion can be seen in detail.
CT Scan make use of computer-processed combinations of many X-ray images taken from different angles to produce cross-sectional (tomographic) images (virtual “slices”) of specific areas of a scanned object, allowing the professionals to see inside the body without invasive procedure.
Angiography is an imaging test that uses X-rays to view your body's blood vessels. The X-rays provided by an angiography are called angiograms. This test is used to study narrow, blocked, enlarged, or malformed arteries or veins in many parts of your body, including your brain, heart, abdomen, and legs.
