Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health
The department will utilize evidence-based practice that is current and of the highest standards as well as being patient-centered and patient-friendly. Care is provided through a multidisciplinary team and collaboration with other relevant department in hospital as well as via networking with other department and organizations outside the hospital.
The department also practices the core values of IIUM Teaching Hospital, Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health, including the corporate culture of professionalism, teamwork and caring Culture. It also adheres to the provisions of the Mental Health Act 2001 that governs the provision of psychiatric service and includes comprehensive care, treatment, control, protection and rehabilitation of those with mental disorders.
The Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health, IIUM Teaching Hospital will be a center of excellence in providing psychiatric care and treatment, academic and teaching purposes, conduct training and research as well as produce innovations that will deliver the best possible outcome for the patients and society.
The objectives are in line with the National Mental Health Policy, in which we will provide:
- Comprehensive, effective, and efficient services, including outpatient, inpatients, community outreach services, special services looking into child and adolescents, elderly, co-morbidity with substance use, etc.
- Integrated psychiatric services in mainstream general health care and continuous services from health clinics to a hospital and vice versa.
- Promotion of Mental Health Services for the general population and specific target groups.
- Multi-sectorial collaboration & opportunity for community participation.
- Training for all levels of human resources.
- Monitoring of standards by key performance indicators, NIA, credentialing and privileging special procedures e.g. electroconvulsive therapy.
- Integration of religious and spiritual principles in treating the patient.
- Research (service-oriented, clinical trials, quality assurance) and evidence based medicine (Clinical Practice Guidelines, etc.).
- Services which comply with legislation (Mental Health-Act 2001), respecting human rights of people with mental illness.

- Assessment and holistic intervention for children and adolescents, including neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism, attention deficit and hyperactive disorder, learning disabilities and others
- School visits and intervention (for relevant cases)
- Multi-disciplinary team discussion
- Support group for parents.
- Assessment and psychological intervention such as cognitive behavioural therapy, behavioural therapy, objective assessments, psychotherapy and others
- Individual psychotherapy intervention
- Group therapy intervention for various age groups and disorders
- Marital or couple therapy
