Department of Orthopaedic, Traumatology & Rehabilitation
Orthopedics is a medical specialty that deals with injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, which includes bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and spine. The diseases that we commonly treat include osteoarthritis of the hip and knee, spine injuries and deformities, foot and ankle problems and deformities, sports injuries, chronic osteomyelitis and trauma-related complications, paediatric fractures and deformities, bone and soft tissue tumours and hand and upper limb injuries. All the major orthopaedic subspecialty services are offered in our dedicated clinics for a comprehensive medical and surgical management. In addition to clinical services, our department is also involved in providing undergraduate and postgraduate Orthopaedics training programmes offered by the Kulliyyah of Medicine, International Islamic University Malaysia.
The Orthopaedic Clinic at Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @IIUM (SASMEC @IIUM) provides services related to the musculoskeletal system including trauma and non-trauma conditions which covers diagnostic, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention plans. The department caters to provide quality Orthopaedic care in these areas:

- Athroscopy and Sports Surgery
- Foot and Ankle Surgery
- Orthopaedic Oncology
- Advance Trauma & Limb Reconstruction

- Rehabilitation
The Orthopaedic in patient care consists of 25 bed male and female wards at level 6, Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @IIUM (SASMEC @IIUM). We strive to provide holistic medical care in tandem with our Shariah-compliant hospital policy.
The surgical services include inpatient, major surgery and day care surgery. We provide minor daycare surgery for conditions such as excision of ganglions, carpal tunnel surgery, trigger finger release, facet joint injection, intra-articular injections, excision of benign tumours, wound debridement and removal of implants.
- To consolidate and improve training in orthopaedics to meet the requirement of the nation.
- To provide an acquired exemplary services in orthopaedics.
- To be the reference center for service, consultancy and training in orthopaedics.

Management of degenerative joint diseases and joint replacement surgery.
Management of spinal trauma and other spinal related pathology.
Management of paediatric congenital and trauma conditions.
- Management of sports injuries.
- Management of foot and ankle trauma, deformities and other related pathology.
- Management of diabetic limb problems consisting of multidisciplinary diabetic wound team.
- Management of primary bone and soft tissue tumours including benign and malignant conditions.
- Treatment of metastatic bone tumours.
- Management of acute and chronic hand and upper limb conditions inclusive of traumatic, congenital or degenerative.
- Management of nerve and vascular abnormalities.
Management of trauma-related chronic infections and complications including reconstruction of bone defects.
Services include:
- Management of soft tissue injury related to sports.
- Musculoskeletal ultrasound.
- Ultrasound guided injections.
- Sport specific to rehabilitations.
- Pre competition medical assessment.
Rehabilitation unit is responsible in providing a quality service within allocated resources which optimized independence, reduce impairment and enhance the life skill in a person with physical, developmental, cognitive, psychological and psychosocial problems.
Management of sport injuries or trauma including knee, shoulder and elbow.
