Infection prevention and control practices are important in maintaining a safe environment for patients by reducing the risk of the potential spread of disease from a person to another. To enhance the quality of patient in Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @IIUM, infection prevention control is very important and should be practiced by every health care staff and non-clinical staff to ensure the maximum level of care can be delivered. Addressing infection prevention and control requires a facility-wide programme and should be a priority in every healthcare institution, thus, infection control governance plays an integral role in patient healthcare. In Malaysia, infection prevention and control governance consists of multi-tier committees which oversee and coordinate the IPC at different levels. Infection Prevention and Control Unit (IPCU) serves to monitor the clinical activity undertaken to reduce Healthcare Associated Infection (HCAI) to an acceptable level by improving knowledge of infection control to all personnel involved directly or indirectly during the care giver to the patients.
- Provide effective infection control in the prevention and control of infections in hospitals.
- Improve service quality infection control and awareness, knowledge and training related to infection control and hospital personnel support services.
- To create and promote the awareness on hospital-acquired infections among the healthcare workers and all hospital trainees through orientation programs and other educational activities.
- To reduce the incidence of hospital-acquired infection by promoting cost-effective hospital infection control practices.
- To reduce the incidence of needle, stick and sharp injuries in the hospital by promoting good occupational safety practices.
Provide quality health services to customers and health professionals through preventive and control measures of infection, provide advice and education related to infection control and create a safe and clean environment to improve health status.
- Engage and facilitate customers and health personnel in the principle of prevention and control of nosocomial infections.
- Provide training and education to health care personnel in relation to infection control measures.
- Avoiding nosocomial infections and reducing the duration of treatment at the hospital and saving patient’s expenses besides reducing the workload of medical teams.
- Reduces morbidity and mortality rates.
Working Days and Working Hours: MONDAY –FRIDAY (8:00 am – 5:00 pm)
- To provide adequate training and supervision to all healthcare workers on issues related to the prevention and control of hospital-acquired infections.
- Development and implementation of infection control policies and practices.
- To monitor healthcare workers’ compliance to infection control policies and practices.
- Conduct of regular environmental audit to ensure a safe and healthy environment for patient care. (IPC audit to all area/ward)
- Surveillance on the following parameters:
i. Incidence of hospital-acquired infections and outbreak.
ii. Multi-resistant organism (MRO) infection
iii. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) infection
iv. Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) infection
v. Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) infection - Hepatitis B program - immunization for all healthcare workers.
- TB Screening for all health care worker at risk.
- To promote awareness on needle and sharp injuries among the healthcare workers.
- To maintain a registry of the following occupational hazards in the hospital:
- Exposure to blood and body fluids. Needle-stick and sharps injury (Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Unit / Infection Prevention and Control Unit). - To provide advice and training to clinical and non-clinical staff from various department / unit in SASMEC @IIUM (Re-education programme)
- To assist education unit (DEAR) in providing training to all trainees (medical and nursing students) and all new staff on issues related to the prevention and control of hospital-acquired infections and also basic infection control knowledge and skills.
- Identify, investigate and control the spread of infectious diseases.
